Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) is looking for an experienced, outgoing, and politically-savvy community organizer who is passionate about sharing CJPME’s campaigns with Canadians. CJPME’s mission is to enable people of all backgrounds to promote justice, development and peace in the Middle East, and here at home in Canada.

The ideal candidate is someone with significant experience in grassroots organizing, ideally with experience in Palestinian solidarity organizing. They are someone who wants to dedicate their time to building a powerful movement of Canadians to take effective political action. The successful candidate will be able to animate the pro-Palestine movement across Canada with CJPME’s organizing toolkits and training while ensuring the long-term viability of grassroots power within CJPME’s orbit.

The position requires strong skills in recruitment, volunteer coordination and development, chapter building, facilitation and training, campaigns and lobbying strategy, and advocacy. Bilingual candidates will have a distinct advantage, as part of CJPME’s constituency are unilingual Francophones.

Preference for Montreal (Onsite), possibility for Toronto/GTA (Remote), or Ottawa/Gatineau (Remote); Ability to travel within Canada frequently is required

Core Responsibilities and Duties

National Grassroots Organizing

  • Facilitate the growth of existing CJPME local chapters and support the development of new CJPME local chapters.
  • Facilitate local chapters’ annual planning cycle using facilitation and training skills.
  • Ensure effective information flow and reciprocal relationships between CJPME National and CJPME Local chapters.
  • Build relationships with grassroots organizations and communities involved in Palestine work in order to offer CJPME resources and support to local campaigns and projects that align with our national strategic priorities.
  • Be able to identify local group challenges and crises, and be able to defuse potentially divisive situations.
  • Check-in regularly with CJPME local and allied groups to support and conduct needs assessments.
  • Coach local leaders on the many skills required for local organizing: outreach, consensus-building, organization-building, logistics, campaigns, etc.
  • Manage, maintain, and update processes and templates related to local chapters.
  • Regularly develop training webinars and activists’ toolkits for all CJPME campaigns, translating policy into grassroots action, to be used by local chapters and other CJPME followers.
  • Propagate CJPME national campaigns into key locales, and work closely with chapters and allied groups to coordinate campaigns including identifying needs and gaps, and offering required training and materials to allow for grassroots engagement with national campaigns.
  • Coordinate CJPME volunteers’ participation in national campaigns by attending national coalitional and committee meetings as necessary.
  • Recruit new CJPME volunteers digitally and in person through a variety of methods including tabling, social media, canvassing, and managing and training volunteer outreach teams.

Grassroots Lobbying Coordination 

  • Work with other CJPME staff to regularly provide coaching to local chapters and allies on securing and executing lobby meetings with elected officials.
  • Lead the development and management of CJPME’s Lobby Corps through coordinating volunteers, developing and delivering lobbying trainings, and supporting lobbyists across Canada with lobby meetings.
  • Secure and coordinate CJPME lobby corps meetings with elected officials.
  • Coordinate the project team assigned to the CJPME’s National Lobby Days on the Hill.

Grassroots Digital Advocacy and Lobbying

  • Work with other CJPME’s staff to co-develop and execute campaign strategies to reach and influence national politicians, policymakers, and civil society thought leaders by leveraging CJPME’s grassroots network and allies. 
  • Master digital organizing tools to enhance the effectiveness of CJPME’s campaigns and grow our online communities.
  • Become adept at conceptualizing and hands-on configuring of the organization’s digital actions, and related activities. 
  • Initiate, lead, and execute all aspects of CJPME end-to-end digital actions toolkit to expand reach and impact of CJPME’s digital campaigns within local chapter, regional, and provincial contexts. 
  • Contribute to the maintenance and evolution of organizational digital platforms. 

Vision, Mentorship, and Relational Skills 

  • Supervise, guide, and orient junior community-organizing staff. 
  • Cultivate and nurture excellent relations with other staff, volunteers, and local leaders. 

Desired Qualifications

Grassroots Organizing Experience

  • Minimum 5 years organizing experience with roles involving the above duties
  • Strong background in national, provincial, and/or local campaign management and execution, advocacy and lobbying, basebuilding and community organizing, and volunteer coordination
  • Experience in the grassroots Palestine solidarity movement
  • Strong experience in volunteer management and supporting chapter-based local organizing. 
  • Strong program and event management abilities including planning and execution of projects. 

Experience in Training and Education

  • Excellent experience in facilitation and training-based workshops on political issues using a broad range of adult education and experiential learning pedagogies both in-person and online.
  • Familiarity in applying community organizing models in issue-based and electoral campaigns. 

Communications and Writing Skills

  • Native language skills (or equivalent) in English (spoken and written), with French language skills (spoken and written) a large asset, and Arabic language skills an asset
  • Ability to write professional, well-structured, and persuasive training materials and lobbying documents for grassroots lobbying purposes without relying on Artificial Intelligence.
  • Exceptional public speaking ability with small, medium, and large audiences across diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to develop communications strategies pertaining to campaigns and lobbying.

Technology and Platform Skills

  • Experience with Nation Builder, ActionBuilder, or similar CRMs and digital organizing tools and their application in successful chapter-based organizing strategies.
  • Experience collaborating with Google docs, sheets, slides, and forms.
  • Experience with all Microsoft Office products.
  • Familiarity with common social media platforms (e.g. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tiktok, LinkedIn), especially with their application in grassroots lobbying and organizing.
  • Experience working creatively with many different media platforms and tools (e.g. email lists, social media, Websites, online tools, video/audio) to build grassroots campaigns.

Political Knowledge

  • Knowledge of international legal concepts pertaining to Palestinian solidarity campaigning.
  • Able to collaboratively translate parliamentary and electoral strategies into concrete community organizing plans and distributed days of action.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian policies related to Palestine and the broader region.

Personality and Relationship Skills

  • A people-person who finds cultivating grassroots organizing to be energizing and inspiring.
  • A charismatic leader who is able to inspire action in others.
  • Exceptional collaboration skills to be able to work well with, and empower volunteers and grassroots groups.
  • Constant drive for self growth and accumulation of knowledge, in order to be an organizational and political resource for volunteers and local groups.
  • Willingness to travel in Canada to meet with local volunteers and groups.
  • Willingness to work on weekends and evenings when needed.
