CJPME is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to empower Canadians of all backgrounds to promote justice, development and peace in the Middle East, and here at home in Canada.  CJPME is a national, independent, non-partisan Canadian organization at the forefront of promoting human rights and justice for all peoples in the Middle East, and Canadians of Middle East origin. 

CJPME is a small organization requiring a versatile individual who can creatively contribute in multiple roles. The position requires skills in media, communications and public relations.  Bilingual candidates will have an advantage, as part of CJPME’s constituency is uni-lingual French.   The qualified individual will report to CJPME’s President.

Job Description:

  • Media Analysis
    • Develop and leverage expertise with 3rd-party media monitoring tools
    • Track media developments on the organization’s core topics
    • Develop letters, PRs, reports, etc. to respond to media coverage on the organization’s core topics
    • Publish critiques of shoddy media coverage of the organization’s focus areas.
    • Refine organization’s criteria by which to critique media coverage
  • Media Relations
    • Cultivate and maintain relationships with members of the media.
    • Develop and maintain press lists with contacts in the media industry.
    • Pitch, write, and place op-eds in online media outlets.
    • Catalog media hits mentioning CJPME and posting positive media hits on CJPME’s Website and social media.
    • Work with the broader team to post timely content to CJPME’s social media channels.
    • Ensure all organizational messages are timely published on our digital platforms.
    • Liaise and assist local chapters with media support.
    • Liaise with media, partners, supporters and volunteers
    • Help develop communications, brochures, promotional videos, or other vehicles for relationship building and messaging
  • Public Relations
    • Represent the organization to politicians, media, or the general public to articulate and socialize the organization’s policies and campaigns
    • Be able to speak publicly of the organization, its mandate, and its focal areas
    • Work as part of an advocacy team – involving staff, volunteers, and partners – to collectively socialize and promote organizational policy
    • Organize meetings/events/press conferences with the public, media, partners and volunteers, to socialize the organization’s policies and campaigns
    • Develop strategic relationships at various levels with individuals, organizations, and politicians to promote the work and mandate of the organization
  • Organizational Communications
    • Draft media releases and media advisories to convey the organization’s perspective on current events to the media and offer organizational spokespeople for interviews.
    • Develop a media strategy for the organization, including - but not limited to - enhancing our media presence, developing key messaging points, and creating a media awareness workflow.
    • Send media releases and media advisories to selected members of the media.
    • Guide and/or support social media communications – potentially on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tiktok, LinkedIn – by developing the written/visual communications, and by supporting the successful rollout and engagement with these communications
    • Help maintain organizational platforms for campaigns, releases and related activities
  • Bonus for Bilingual Candidates: Help with Translation work
    • Perform occasional translations to French.
    • Manage day-to-day translation work and assignments of volunteer and intern translators. Farm out work to approved translators.
    • Track and manage translation progress.


The ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years professional experience with roles involving the above skills. 
  • University or post-secondary education
  • Native language skills in English, spoken and written. Bi-lingualism (English-French) would be a huge asset. 
  • Strong knowledge of international humanitarian law, and international human rights law.
  • Strong academic knowledge of Middle East history, culture and politics.
  • Advanced-level familiarity with all common social media platforms: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tiktok, LinkedIn.
  • Advanced-level familiarity and manipulation of different media file types: video, image, audio.
  • Understanding of the Canadian media environment, and experience interacting with media professionals.
  • Excellent customer relations skills, in-person and over the phone
  • High integrity and passionate drive for human rights
  • Ability to work creatively with social media platforms.
  • Solid, hands-on, office experience, with strong experience with all Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), and some experience with relational databases
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong public speaking ability
  • Organized with a high degree of attention to details
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed
