Canada - Middle East Policy

Position Paper: FOR A RELEVANT & POSITIVE CANADIAN MIDDLE EAST POLICY

pp10.pngThe Winter and Spring months of 2007 have been fraught with diplomatic activity in the Middle East, but vacant of much hope. CJPME proposes the following positions to enable Canada to be positively present in the Middle East.

Position Paper: CARTER’S ADVICE FOR MIDDLE EAST POLICY

pp9.pngThis position paper provides an overview of the summary discussion in former US President Jimmy Carter’s book, Palestine: Peace not Apartheid. Five recommendations inspired by the book and adapted to Canadian context are listed and their potential benefits explained.

Position Paper: A CANADIAN RE-ASSESSMENT OF THE DESTRUCTION OF LEBANON

pp8.pngThis position paper highlights the causes and repercussions of the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war (also called the 2006 Lebanon war), before listing CJPME’s recommendations to Canada: offer more meaningful assistance to Lebanon, call both parties on their violations of international law and help remove unexploded Israeli munitions in Lebanon.

Position paper: ISRAELI-HEZBOLLAH CROSS-BORDER VIOLENCE

pp6.pngThis position paper insists on the damages caused by the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict and the importance for Canada to call for an immediate ceasefire and for a suspension of all military supplies in order to avoid more civilian deaths, and to contain a conflict that violates international law.

CJPME acknowledges that our offices, located in Montreal, are on the unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Kanienʼkehá꞉ka (Mohawk), whose presence here reaches back to time immemorial.  CJPME recognizes the Kanienʼkehá꞉ka as the customary keepers and defenders of the St. Laurence River Watershed and its tributaries. We honour their long history of welcoming many Nations to this beautiful territory and uphold and uplift the voice and values of our Host Nation.  Further, CJPME respects and affirms the inherent and Treaty Rights of all Indigenous Peoples across this land. CJPME has and will continue to honour the commitments to self-determination and sovereignty we have made to Indigenous Nations and Peoples.  CJPME also acknowledges the historical oppression of lands, cultures and the original Peoples in what we now know as Canada and fervently believes that its work should contribute to the healing and decolonizing journey we all share together.
