CJPME welcomes Carney’s sanctions on Israeli ministers as a first step for accountability

Montreal, June 10, 2025 — Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) welcomes Canada’s targeted sanctions against far-right Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, which were announced today in a joint statement with the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Norway. Foreign Minister Anand says that the sanctions are in response to “inciting violence against Palestinians” and rhetoric calling for Palestinians to be “driven from their homes.” The specific measures include asset freezes and bans on entering the country. CJPME urges Canada not to focus on a few extremist individuals, but to broaden its sanctions to include additional Israeli political and military leaders who are responsible for crimes against humanity and genocide.

Carney must follow through on sanctions threats against Israel: CJPME

Montreal, May 20, 2025 — Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) welcomes the joint statement by Canada, the United Kingdom and France threatening “concrete actions” in response to Israel’s genocide in Gaza. For the first time, the three leaders described Israel’s latest military escalation in Gaza as “wholly disproportionate,” warned that denying aid to Gaza “risks” breaching international law, and pledged that they “will not stand by while the Netanyahu Government pursues these egregious actions.” CJPME urges Prime Minister Mark Carney to follow through with immediate sanctions, noting that the threshold for action has long been surpassed.

Carney must emphatically reject US-Israeli takeover of aid in Gaza

Montreal, May 9, 2025 — Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) is urging the Prime Minister Carney to firmly reject dangerous plans by the United States and Israel to take over the humanitarian aid system in Gaza. All UN agencies and NGO partners have opposed US President Trump’s proposal to shut down the UN system and consolidate control over aid distribution, as it contradicts humanitarian principles and weaponizes aid. CJPME urges Prime Minister Carney to reject any requests from Trump or Netanyahu to fund this cynical aid scheme, and immediately impose long overdue sanctions on Israel’s leadership to halt its genocidal starvation and dispossession policies in Gaza.

CJPME acknowledges that our offices, located in Montreal, are on the unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Kanienʼkehá꞉ka (Mohawk), whose presence here reaches back to time immemorial.  CJPME recognizes the Kanienʼkehá꞉ka as the customary keepers and defenders of the St. Lawrence River Watershed and its tributaries. We honour their long history of welcoming many Nations to this beautiful territory and uphold and uplift the voice and values of our Host Nation.  Further, CJPME respects and affirms the inherent and Treaty Rights of all Indigenous Peoples across this land. CJPME has and will continue to honour the commitments to self-determination and sovereignty we have made to Indigenous Nations and Peoples.  CJPME also acknowledges the historical oppression of lands, cultures and the original Peoples in what we now know as Canada and fervently believes that its work should contribute to the healing and decolonizing journey we all share together.
