Position Paper: Responding to recent Human Rights Reports on Gaza

pp16.pngIn the ten months following Israel’s assault on Gaza last winter, numerous different human rights reports were commissioned and completed. Of all the reports, however, the most prominent and comprehensive report was the “Goldstone Report,” a fact finding mission commissioned by the UN Human Rights Council, led by Justice Richard Goldstone, issued on Sept. 25th, 2009. This position paper displays recommendations that have been framed around the work of the Goldstone Report. 


HRW Report on “White Flag” Deaths in Gaza Assault

Amnesty International report on the Israeli operation “Cast Lead”

CJPME Factsheet 66, published November, 2009: This factsheet provides an overview of a report by human rights organization Amnesty International (AI) entitled Israel/Gaza: Operation ‘Cast Lead’: 22 days of death and destruction. The report accuses the Israeli army of having killed hundreds of unarmed Palestinian civilians, and of having destroyed thousands of homes in Gaza in attacks which seriously infringed on the provisions of international humanitarian law.

Israeli War Crimes During “Operation Cast Lead”

CJPME Factsheet 65, published October, 2009: This factsheet looks at the potential crimes committed by Israel during its massive three-week assault on the Gaza Strip beginning December 27th, 2008. The 22 day assault killed over 1400 civilians, many of them women and children; destroyed hospitals, mosques, and schools; killed livestock; destroyed large tracts of agricultural land; and battered an economy already decimated by Israel’s blockade.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza following Israeli Assault

CJPME Factsheet 53, published February, 2009: This factsheet provides figures and data gathered in the aftermath of Israel’s 21-day assault on Gaza in 2009. Israel’s aggression resulted in 1,440 casualties of which 431 were children. This factsheet looks at the state of Gaza’s health services, including health facilities, supplies, and access to health care; the major health challenges, including water-borne diseases, the increase need for medical specialists, psychological trauma, and malnutrition; the effect of the war on Gaza’s economy, including poverty and unemployment, and the destruction of commercial enterprises and the agricultural sector, among many other things.
