The Gaza flotilla raid was a military operation by Israel against six civilian ships of the "Gaza Freedom Flotilla" on 31 May 2010 in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea. But tensions between the two escalated after Israel’s 2008-2009 assault on Gaza during which nearly 1,400 Palestinians were killed. Relations reached a new low in May, 2010, after Israel attacked an aid ship bound for Gaza, killing nine people—eight Turks and a U.S. national of Turkish origin.

Since 2007 Israel enforced a blockade on the Gaza Strip that has since triggered humanitarian and economic hardship. Israel’s violent attack against the humanitarian boat convoy resulted in the death of nine activist (eight Turks and one American). The Israeli commandos’ bloody attack sparked an outcry across the world and provoked an unprecedented wave of protests against the Gaza blockade.
