Montreal, April 6, 2016  — Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) is thrilled to announce it will be hosting Ayman Odeh for a speaking event in Montreal on April 12 at 7:00 p.m.  Mr. Odeh is a lawyer and member of the Israeli Knesset (i.e. the Israeli Parliament.)  As leader of the “Joint List,” a party with 13 MKs, he is also an important political leader of Palestinians in Israel. His talk will focus on the Palestinian leadership in Israel, the struggles that Palestinians in Israel face, and how this community is fighting politically for its rights within Israel.

CJPME Political Blog, March 19, 2015: There was no shortage of surprises and last minute twists with the recent Israeli elections.  Many on the left were disappointed to see Netanyahu’s Likud party come out on top again, with the likely result that Netanyahu will form the governing coalition.  Despite the overall bleak outlook for Palestinian human rights under Netanyahu, there are some otherwise important observations to be made. 

Montreal, March 19, 2015  — On the eve of the recent Israeli elections, Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu definitively stated that there would be no Palestinian state should he return to office. The statement represented a last minute appeal to right-wing Israeli voters given the tight polling between Netanyahu’s Likud party and the center-left Zionist Union. Nevertheless, with Netanyahu likely to serve another four years as Israeli Prime Minister, his statements have huge implications for Israel’s allies – including Canada – who have pinned their hopes on the “two state solution.”

CJPME Factsheet 61, published April, 2009: This factsheet looks at Israel’s move to the right in the political spectrum. The 2009 Israeli elections resulted in the victory of a right wing government headed by the leader of the Likud party, Benjamin Netanyahu, that is the most overtly hawkish in the country’s recent history. Its election does not bode well for regional stability or peace with Palestinians, and its worldview and intentions are explicit in their current policies, political histories, and portrayal in the media.

After receiving 15% of seats in the Israeli Parliament (Knesset) in the 2009 general elections, the Yisrael Beitenu party poses a grave threat to the Israeli/Palestinian peace process and to the rights of Arab citizens of Israel. Beiteinu’s platform is one of ultra-right-wing ethnic nationalism, whose tenets relating to citizenship, military service and land allocation can accurately be described as fascist.
