Since the beginning of the year, CJPME has achieved significant accomplishments that will undoubtedly enhance our influence as a trusted Canadian voice on government policies, media coverage, and public awareness throughout 2025. These accomplishments, both by CJPME and the CJPME Foundation, have laid a strong base for furthering our impact in the coming months. We are thrilled to share these achievements with our supporters.
$17,000 has been raised for Lebanon Humanitarian Response
Late last year, the CJPME Foundation launched the Lebanon Humanitarian Response project, collaborating with partners to provide food and hygiene kits to Lebanese civilians severely affected by the ongoing crisis. While we remain hopeful that the ceasefire will hold, the lives of millions of Lebanese have been drastically disrupted. As a registered charity, donations to the “Lebanon Humanitarian Response” are tax-deductible. By the end of January 2025, we have successfully raised $17,000 for this critical initiative.
The Media Accountability Project's Achievements
CBC admits to dehumanizing Palestinians on air after CJPME complaint
On January 20, 2025, during a CBC interview with Palestinian-Canadian Israa Alsaafin, Anchor Natasha Fatah dismissed the term "genocide" in describing the situation in Gaza, suggesting "war" was more appropriate. After CJPME raised concerns, CBC issued a correction, stating it does not prohibit specific words but requires accurate reporting on debates shaping public policy, including language. This correction is a significant step in holding media accountable for how Palestinian narratives are covered. Click here to learn more about this achievement. CJPME Exposes CBC's Manufacturing of Consent on Chandra Arya's Palestinian Statehood Stance
CJPME successfully highlighted CBC News' selective coverage of Chandra Arya’s candidacy for Liberal Party leader, drawing attention to how the broadcaster disproportionately emphasized his "controversial" position on recognizing Palestinian statehood. By pointing out the imbalance in coverage across CBC’s television and radio platforms, CJPME showcased how this lopsided narrative could potentially mislead Canadians into thinking that supporting Palestinian statehood is a politically unpopular stance. This effort emphasizes CJPME's commitment to ensuring a more balanced and nuanced discussion on important international issues.
CJPME Advocates for Correct Terminology in CBC Coverage of Palestinian Detainees
On January 30, 2025, CJPME sent a complaint to CBC News about their article, originally from Reuters, which inaccurately referred to Palestinian "detainees" as "prisoners." Following CJPME’s efforts, CBC updated the headline to correctly reflect the legal status of those held by Israel. However, Reuters did not make the same change. While this may seem like a minor issue, the inconsistency perpetuates the misleading narrative that all Palestinians in Israeli custody are convicted criminals, when many are actually held arbitrarily without due process and should not be classified as "prisoners." On December 18, 2024, CJPME contacted The Globe and Mail about a headline that removed responsibility from Israel for airstrikes killing at least 20 Palestinians in Gaza. The original headline was seen as absolving Israel of accountability. CJPME emphasized the importance of journalistic integrity in identifying the responsible party, especially in cases of alleged genocide. The next day, The Globe and Mail updated the headline to correctly attribute the strikes to Israel. This correction reflects CJPME's ongoing commitment to challenging biased media coverage of Palestine. More details can be found here.
Rebel News recently acknowledged the impact of CJPME's Media Accountability Project (MAP) in pushing CBC to clarify its stance on using the term "genocide" to describe Israel's actions in Gaza. While Rebel News framed this as capitulation to "anti-Israel pressure," it highlighted the success of CJPME's efforts in challenging CBC’s editorial policies and ensuring Palestinian perspectives are considered. The fact that Rebel News quoted directly from CJPME's media alert further underscores the effectiveness of MAP’s advocacy and the importance of media accountability. This demonstrates how grassroots media advocacy can drive meaningful change.
CJPME Mobilizes Supporters to Challenge Alex Pierson's Anti-Palestinian Rhetoric on 640 Toronto
CJPME encouraged its supporters to take action against the hateful rhetoric and anti-Palestinian racism on 640 Toronto’s radio station. In response, over 100 emails were sent to address host Alex Pierson’s dehumanizing comments, where she referred to Palestinians as "terrorists" and claimed they were not "good people." These emails challenged the inaccurate and racist framing, particularly Pierson’s portrayal of Palestinians as inferior to Israelis. This collective response demonstrates CJPME’s commitment to holding media outlets accountable and fostering a more accurate and respectful discourse on Palestine.
CJPME Mobilizes Strong Response Against Ontario's Crackdown on Palestinian Solidarity, with 5,500+ Emails Sent
CJPME has launched a powerful campaign to stop Ontario's anti-Palestine persecution, with an impressive 5,538 emails already sent in protest. Under the Ford government’s Orwellian “Hate Crimes Working Group” (HCWG), police in Ontario have escalated efforts to suppress the Palestinian community and its allies, violating Charter rights. On November 18, Ottawa Police unlawfully blocked a peaceful march, arrested six organizers, and imposed harsh bail conditions. This is part of a troubling trend of over-policing the Palestinian solidarity movement under the guise of hate crime enforcement. Ontario police and crown prosecutors are targeting Palestinian Canadians who oppose Israel’s actions and the role of Canadian companies in profiting from them.
