Montreal, March 2, 2026 — Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) condemns the Canadian government’s unconditional support for illegal US-Israeli attacks on Iran that have killed over 550 Iranians, and have sparked a devastating regional war. The ongoing regime change operation, led by war criminals Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu, is a dangerous and unlawful act of aggression that has sabotaged negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. CJPME urges Canada to retract its support for the US-Israeli attacks, condemn this violation alongside allies like Spain, Ireland, and Norway, and to push for an immediate ceasefire from all parties.
“A ‘pre-emptive’ strike without an imminent threat is an act of aggression, a violation of the UN Charter, and a major threat to international security. As Trump and Netanyahu drag the region into war, Canada is shamefully cheering them on,” said Yara Shoufani, President of CJPME. “Canada should be a voice for de-escalation, not a booster for US-Israeli aggression.”
In a statement on Saturday, Prime Minister Carney said that “Canada supports the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and security.” As United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has noted, however, the US-Israeli action violates the UN Charter’s prohibition on the use of force and itself undermines international peace and security. Despite this, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has refused to comment on whether these strikes are illegal.
Further, the attack occurred amid a potential breakthrough in negotiations with Iran regarding their nuclear capabilities, the Pentagon has admitted that there was no imminent threat of attack from Iran, and both Trump and Netanyahu have openly declared that their goal is regime change.
“In his infamous Davos speech, Carney described the hypocrisy of countries who have selectively applied international law. Unfortunately, Carney’s solution to this problem is apparently to abandon these principles altogether. By walking away from international law, rather than seeking its equal application, Canada is aligning itself with American imperialism while ushering in a world that is less safe for all of us,” added Shoufani.
CJPME further warns that Israel is using the war as a pretext to escalate its genocide in occupied Palestine. Since the launch of its strikes on Iran, Israel has reimposed a full siege on Gaza that threatens to intensify the starvation of the Palestinian people, and has imposed a lockdown on the West Bank. Similarly, there are reports that Israel is preparing for a possible ground invasion into Lebanon.
