Whole-of-government approach needed to address Canadian complicity with Israeli settlements: CJPME

Montreal, May 16, 2024 — Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to lead a “whole-of-government approach” to address the problem of Canadian collusion in war crimes related to illegal Israeli settlements. This initiative follows the recent “Great Israeli Real Estate” events in Montreal and Toronto, which involved the open sale of properties within illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. CJPME is urging Canada to crack down on such events and focus on ending other forms of Canadian complicity in settlements. To that end, CJPME has provided Prime Minister Trudeau and his cabinet with 19 policy recommendations based on the status of settlements as war crimes under Canada’s Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act.

Position Paper: A Whole-of-Government Approach to Ending Canadian Involvement in Israeli Settlements

Earlier this year, a real estate tour called the “Great Israeli Real Estate Event” was held in Montreal and Toronto that included the sale of properties within settlements in the occupied West Bank, including Neve Daniel, Ma'aleh Adumim and Efrat. This amounts to the illegal and open sale of properties in the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT), in clear violation of international law, the Canadian Criminal Code, UN resolutions and international human rights and humanitarian law. However, the issue of Canadian trade with Israeli settlements goes much deeper than one event. It is time that Canada stopped ignoring these crimes. Israeli settlements are war crimes under Canadian law. To address this broader problem, CJPME urges a whole-of-government approach to ending Canadian involvement in Israel’s colonial war crimes through the below series of coordinated measures, which falls under the jurisdiction of various ministerial portfolios.

Tell Parliament to investigate Canada’s military trade with Israel!

Months after Parliament voted to stop sending arms to Israel, Canadians are still left in the dark about the arms trade. After approving a skyrocketing number of weapons exports in the first months of Israel’s genocidal war, Foreign Affairs Minister Joly refuses to provide the public information about these sales: how many weapons were sent to Israel, what were they, how were they used, and has Canada violated international law? Canadians deserve answers.

UBC & UVic: Listen to the students and divest from Israeli apartheid and genocide!

Student groups at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Victoria (UVic) have joined the global movement of student encampments in solidarity with Palestine. Like student activists across Canada, the student groups have demanded that UBC and UVic divest from companies that arm Israel and are complicit in the oppression, occupation and genocide of Palestinians. The demands also call on UBC and UVic to boycott Israeli academic institutions and publicly condemn the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. So far, UBC and UVic have refused to engage with the student protestors or their demands, and this must change!
