On Nakba Day, Canada Must Address Complicity in Palestinian Dispossession

Montreal, May 15, 2024 — On the 76th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba (‘catastrophe’ in Arabic), Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) is calling on the Canadian government to address its ongoing complicity in Palestinian dispossession. The Nakba refers to the expulsion, destruction, and ethnic cleansing of Palestine associated with the creation of Israel in 1948, and this process of dispossession continues in the current genocide and mass displacement in Gaza, as well as illegal settlement expansion, house demolitions, forced evictions and settler violence in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, and parts of the Negev. CJPME has submitted a series of recommendations to inform MP Matthew Green’s Nakba Bill initiative, which will involve the creation of a private member’s bill, outlining concrete steps that Canada can take to counter Israeli policies of dispossession and affirm the rights of Palestinian refugees.

Canada must stop Israel’s invasion of Rafah: CJPME

Montreal, May 7, 2024 — Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) is calling on the Canadian government to urgently pressure Israel to bring an immediate end to its invasion of Rafah, a move which threatens to push the civilian population of Gaza further into genocide. Although Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly has repeatedly expressed “concern” about the impact of a Rafah invasion, Canada has not committed to any action that could stop this catastrophe, despite credible assessments by international legal experts that Israel’s actions in Gaza already amount to genocide. CJPME believes that Canada must urgently impose a two-way arms embargo on Israel and publicly call on Biden to do the same in the United States.

Combating Anti-Palestinian Racism and Antisemitism: An Intersectional Approach to Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy

This joint report provides recommendations to the Canadian government regarding the renewal of the federal Anti-Racism Strategy. This is a joint submission from Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME), the Arab Canadian Lawyers Association (ACLA), Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV), and Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council (CMPAC). Tell Parliament to investigate Canada’s military trade with Israel!

Months after Parliament voted to stop sending arms to Israel, Canadians are still left in the dark about the arms trade. After approving a skyrocketing number of weapons exports in the first months of Israel’s genocidal war, Foreign Affairs Minister Joly refuses to provide the public information about these sales: how many weapons were sent to Israel, what were they, how were they used, and has Canada violated international law? Canadians deserve answers.

UBC & UVic: Listen to the students and divest from Israeli apartheid and genocide!

Student groups at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Victoria (UVic) have joined the global movement of student encampments in solidarity with Palestine. Like student activists across Canada, the student groups have demanded that UBC and UVic divest from companies that arm Israel and are complicit in the oppression, occupation and genocide of Palestinians. The demands also call on UBC and UVic to boycott Israeli academic institutions and publicly condemn the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. So far, UBC and UVic have refused to engage with the student protestors or their demands, and this must change!
