Canada must recognize Israel’s genocide in Gaza

With the attention of Canadian political leaders turning towards making the best of Trump’s so-called ‘peace’ plan, we feel it is more important than ever to ensure Israel faces accountability for its brutal actions in Gaza. It is also long past time that our political leaders unequivocally name Israel’s destruction of Gaza what it is: a near textbook case of genocide.

Israel has violently killed over 68,500 Palestinians in their military assault on Gaza. But beyond this direct violence, scholars are projecting that Israel’s military has also instituted a series of oppressive policies that may have already killed nearly 298,000 people — and is likely to have a total death toll of over 480,000 over the next five years — as the consequences of Israel’s plan are felt. The majority will be lost to famine and disease. This is the reality of genocide beyond the usual numbers we see in the mainstream media.

If Canada’s Parliament recognized the Gaza genocide, it would send a powerful message that Israel is not immune from international law. It would be the first step in holding Israeli officials accountable for committing the gravest of crimes. It would mean that our government is serious when it says “Never Again” for anyone.

That’s why we are asking you to join our campaign to have Canada recognize Israel’s genocide in Gaza by sending an email to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, and your MP. Canada must call it like it is and finally say “genocide.”
