Following Oct. 7, Ontario MPP Sarah Jama has been outspoken in criticizing Israel’s continued violations of human rights in Gaza, and calling for the end of Israel's occupation and apartheid in Palestine. Despite being censured by the Ontario legislature and expelled from the Ontario NDP caucus, Jama has remained steadfast in her concern for Palestinian human rights and liberation, and her opposition to settler colonialism and apartheid.

To the Ontario Provincial Legislature, the Ontario NDP, and the people of Canada:

WHEREAS, Israel has belligerently occupied the West Bank and Gaza for more than 55 years, has blockaded the Gaza Strip for 17 years; has been accused by human rights groups of practicing apartheid; and has rejected the 2004 opinion of the International Court of Justice;

WHEREAS, over decades, the Government of Canada has failed to hold Israel accountable for its human rights abuses against Palestinians; and the Ontario government continues to conduct "business as usual" with the Israeli government;

WHEREAS, since Oct. 7, Canadian federal and provincial leaders have failed to hold Israel to any standard of human rights or international law in its attacks on the Palestinian civilians of Gaza, and the destruction of the civilian infrastructure;

WHEREAS, since Oct. 7, Sarah Jama has been one of the few Canadian politicians to express true compassion, respect and concern for the well-being of Palestinian civilians;

THEREFORE, we, the undersigned, express our true admiration for Jama - her heart for the Palestinians, their dignity, and their humanity; and her opposition to apartheid and colonialism - and assert that she should not be punished politically!
