CJPME calls for sanctions on Israel to end famine in Gaza

Montreal, August 25, 2025 - Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) strongly condemns Canada’s continued failure to take concrete action to end the genocide in Gaza, despite its recent acknowledgement of the veracity of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report confirming the existence of famine in Gaza. CJPME continues to urge Canada to put meaningful sanctions on Israel as the only way to force an end to these atrocities.

“The starvation of Gaza is not the result of failure, but of Israeli design. Nearly two years ago, the Israeli government announced its intention to cut off Gaza from access to food and water, using hunger as a weapon of war. For nearly two years, experts have warned of the catastrophic yet predictable consequences of this deliberate Israeli policy, and yet the international community has done nothing to prevent it,” said Michael Bueckert, Acting President of CJPME. “Now that we have reached the point of no return, with irreparable bodily harm caused to those children of Gaza who are fortunate enough to survive, it is outrageous that Canada still isn’t taking this issue seriously,” added Bueckert.

CJPME is deeply disappointed by the recent statement issued by Secretary of State Randeep Sarai, which acknowledged Israel’s role in creating the Gaza famine but avoided any meaningful policy that could end Canadian complicity in Israel’s genocide.

“Calling for more aid without directly challenging the genocidal intent behind Israel’s actions is not going to stop this unfolding atrocity. Canada must finally acknowledge that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza and break off all diplomatic and economic ties with this murderous regime, starting with a two-way arms embargo and an end to the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement.”
